Swiss retail chain Coop is setting new standards in logistics with its new distribution centre. Geberit Mapress Stainless Steel is used for a wirde range of applications in the demanding environment of the food industry.
The extensive building complex includes a large bakery with a pastry shop, a national cold storage facility, a distribution centre with automated cold storage and a recycling centre. Energy is supplied by an in-house biomass power plant.
Coop uses this site to supply hundreds of sales outlets across the country. Most of the processes in the new warehouses – from storing, sorting and picking items all the way to delivering them to the 150 loading bays – are fully automated.
Coop uses Geberit Mapress for ice water, natural gas, hot and cold water and compressed air, meeting the stringent hygiene and safety requirements of the food industry.

The brief Piping for compressed air, natural gas, extinguishing water and more
A multifunctional centre of this kind requires a wide range of supply systems, including for compressed air and drinking water.
In total, around 36 kilometres of piping were installed. All pipes had to meet the stringent hygiene requirements of the food industry and be installed within a tight timeframe.

The Geberit Mapress Stainless Steel piping system allowed the team toinstall the pipes quickly thanks to its efficient pressing technology. This was essential due to the significant time pressure.
An estimated 15,000 hours of work were needed to install the pipes, which had diameters ranging from 15 to 108 mm.
“For weeks, 25 fitters pressed Geberit Mapress fittings from morning to night”, recalls installation manager Jetmir Rochi. “We couldn’t afford any downtime. It was vital we always had enough pressing tools on site. Geberit helped us out with extra pressing tools and equipment, so we could carry on working without any delays.”
