Habitable seed pods Mandai Rainforest Resort, Singapore
At the Mandai Rainforest Resort in Singapore, rainwater isn’t simply drained away, but put to good use: as a resource for flushing toilets with Geberit concealed cisterns.
Paradise lies in the north of Singapore. A patch of cultivated nature in the heart of the city. Water and wildlife reserves surrounded by rainforest. And brand new: the Banyan Tree Mandai Rainforest Resort. The resort consists of a five-storey main building and a cluster of tree houses offering views over the treetops to the water.
The Millettia plant as inspiration
The treehouses not only allow the local flora and fauna to thrive amongst them; they are also visually inspired by it – specifically, their shape is based on the seed pods of the Millettia plant.
The architects from the local firm WOW have fully embraced this so-called biophilic design – an approach that deliberately integrates nature into architecture, whether through light, plants, organic materials, shapes or patterns.
The concept also includes the use of rainwater. This is collected at the resort and used for flushing toilets – and used sparingly. Geberit concealed cisterns not only make the use of rainwater possible. Thanks to dual-flush technology, they also reduce water consumption in the toilet.
