Calatrava’s signature style New railway station in Mons (BE)
The new railway station in Mons, Belgium, designed by architect Santiago Calatrava, is a real eye-catcher. Geberit products ensure smooth operation in the sanitary facilities.
Its shape is reminiscent of a dragonfly, its wings spanning the tracks. But it is not only from a bird’s-eye view that the new railway station in Mons, Belgium, is highly recognisable: from the front, the new building with its sloping glass roof resembles a sculpture – and inside, the 165-metre-long walkway with its ribbed steel structure made of wood and plenty of glass looks like the skeleton of a gigantic creature.
Architecture that connects
This imposing appearance is typical of Santiago Calatrava’s buildings. After completing his engineering studies, the Spanish-Swiss architect specialised in the construction of unique bridges and station buildings that have become architectural landmarks. The new building in Mons also bears his signature.
What is now a public transport hub was originally planned as a bridge to connect the north-western suburbs with the historic centre, located south-east of the railway tracks, within walking distance. Now, covered walkways lead passengers via lifts, stairs and escalators directly to the platforms, the bus station and the taxi ranks.
The complex, covering a total area of approximately 5,600 square metres, also houses office and retail space.

Reliable technology
Behind the scenes, high-performance systems from Geberit ensure the station runs smoothly. Robust PE piping systems provide reliable roof drainage for large volumes of rainwater.
In the sanitary areas, Geberit solutions such as toilets, flush plates, washbasins and urinals ensure high hygiene standards and low maintenance requirements.
